Description

Koinobori (鯉のぼり), means “carp streamer” in Japanese. They are Koi carp-shaped windsocks traditionally flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku (端午の節句), a traditional event that has now become a designated national holiday; Children’s Day (Kodomo no Hi, 子供の日).  The flying carp symbolizes courage and ambition, because of its strength and determination to overcome all obstacles, recognizing a tale of a carps that once swam all the way to heaven to become a dragon.  There is a Japanese proverb ‘koi no takinobori (鯉の滝登り, carp climbing the waterfall)’, which means to achieve success in life. These windsocks are also known as satsuki-nobori (皐のぼり).
